PPIE - Participation, Involvement and Engagement

Lucid Innovation cast saw PPIE 1

Innovation driven by the people affected by product and service design

Background

The potential and actual patients, carers and public affected by products and services drive relevance, impact and success in Lucid’s design process.

We follow the UK National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) principles for PPIE, patient and public involvement and engagement, by conducting people-focussed research and development, including:

Involvement

Facilitating research carried out with and by members of the public get to the core of lived experience.

Lucid’s recruits PPIE groups as partners who can be involved throughout development, sustaining a human-centred focus.

Collaborating with and listening to involved voices we can reveal new opportunities.

Qualitative evidence needs, concerns and ideas help focus product and service design specification on the benefits that people value.

We mitigate the potential for “mission creep” as the influence of other stakeholders in development grows and maintain the competitive advantage that involving people drives.

Participation

Early in a project, participation helps verify that design ideas are relevant.  Later we can verify that design intent has been interpreted well and validate that a resulting product is fit for purpose.

In conjunction with academic organisations, or independently, Lucid recruits, briefs and facilitates research studies including:

  • Expert interviews.

  • Surveys.

  • Focus groups.

  • Usability evaluation.

  • Human factors engineering studies.

  • Clinical investigations (trials).

Engagement

At appropriate stages in research and development, engagement can drive positive and valuable awareness, involvement and participation.

Lucid’s team prepares compelling media including literature, questionnaires, models, prototypes, video and personal presentations for engagement opportunities including:

  • Webinar and seminars.

  • Exhibitions, meetings and trade shows.

  • Social media.

  • Research publication.

  • PR.

Results

Balanced with customer discovery, technology scoping and good design, PPIE helps keep innovation relevant to people.
