Packaging design

Sustainable, human-centred product protection and promotion

Background

The first physical interaction with your brand is usually packaging.

For consumer products, shelf presence can be an important differentiator.  For any device, components must arrive complete, with accessible, comprehensible information.

Our designers’ focus is in medical and scientific applications in which shelf-life and contamination risk mitigation in unpacking and infection in disposal can be significant.

Discovery

Working in parallel with industrial design, brand, information, and user interaction designers, we uncover under-met needs and analyse trends, analogous and competitive products.

Engaging with consumers, patients, carers, sales, and marketing teams, we research pathways and protocols.  We observe, question, and understand user motivation.

Liaising with operations and logistics teams we’ll define efficient primary and secondary packaging for paletisation and container stuffing.

Contacts in infection prevention and waste handling help our team define potential for reuse and recycling.

Design

Using iterations of story-boards, visuals and basic models Lucid’s packaging designers engage all the stakeholders in a development to:

  • Share understanding of the implications of design specification.

  • Explore options for digital interaction and function that challenges pre-conceptions, stimulating new directions.

Investigate impacts on adherence, comprehension and:

  • Aligning design options to brand and corporate objectives.

  • Considering regulation, guidance, standards and norms.

  • Calculate carbon footprint implications.

 Delivery

Collaborating with manufacturers we’ll sample and snag packaging and where necessary manage bioburden, sterility and structural testing to relevant standards.

We’ll deliver unambiguous specification for user experience, validated in technical performance and user satisfaction testing.

Results

Experience includes pouches, cartons and blister packs, tamper evidence and digitally connected use-validation and trainer packs.

Accolades include the Institute of Materials and Mining Starpack Gold Award for design of Royal Mail SafeBox infectious substance transit solutions.
