Capture - the latest in over 30 years of electronic security systems development

Background

Texecom is a leading provider of digital and electronic security systems to professional, commercial, residential, and industrial clients worldwide. Capture™ is a recent passive infrared and microwave motion sensor design by Lucid in a relationship going back over 30 Years.

Objectives included:

• Perfect optical geometry for motion sensing with pet immunity.

• Simplification of a range of SKUs from 30+ to 3 products. 

• Ultra intuitive installation and setup and wireless connectivity.

• Instant Texecom brand recognition to inspire consumer and user confidence.

Discovery

To understand human and technical challenges our designers met with installers, specifiers and Texecom’s marketing team.  We mapped product interactions, considered the competitive context and prioritised opportunities to add value - from production, through use, servicing, and end-of-life.

Design

Working through options with sketch visuals, 3D CAD, block model and prototypes we engaged stakeholders in providing feedback, developing a clean, minimalist aesthetic integrated with a simple, robust user interaction.

A front-loaded encapsulated electronic module helped shield sensitive electronics from damage and false alarm sources.

Design for automated manufacture and commonality of parts reduced components in the new range to 30, from a previous 140. 

Delivery

Providing unambiguous engineering design specifications we involved manufacturing partners in the UK and Far East early and throughout the design process.

Lucid built prototypes, checked and snagged pre-production before handover.

Usability

Significant human factors engineering input makes Capture™ the simplest, most intuitive install and setup on the market.

Brand impact

Brand cues developed in previous collaborations were extended across the Capture range to build brand recognition.

Regulatory and safety

Experience in security product design helped pass EMC, ingress and structural tests.  Security coverage pattern is independently certified to EN50131-2.  

Sustainability

Build simplification and design for disassembly and recycling reduces resource utilisation in the product lifecycle.

Manufacturability

Modular design of independent sub-assemblies enables efficient, automated, high volume build and test.
