Industrial design
Balancing user needs with brand, engineering design and production priorities
Background
Industrial design helps Lucid clients maximise and extend return on investment. We are elevating engineering that works well into products that people really want.
Our user experience designers consider wider service design whilst Lucid’s industrial designers research behaviour, emotion and lifestyle to understand drivers for trust and desire in product design.
We explore sensory responses to shape, colour, pattern, feel and branding. We blend functional engineering with form and feel that positively differentiates products.
Discovery
To uncover evidence of unmet and under-met needs we analyse trends, analogous and competitive markets.
Engaging with user and sales and marketing teams, we research pathways and protocols, observe and question people that influence product adoption and use.
Design
Using iterations of story-boards, visuals and basic models, Lucid’s industrial designers engage all stakeholders which enables:
Sharing better understanding of the implications of design specification.
Exploring options for appearance, feel and function that challenge pre-conceptions, stimulate new directions and deeper thinking.
Investigate functionality, manufacturing and cost implications of new ideas.
Aligning design options to brand and corporate objectives.
Delivery
Industrial designers collaborate with mechanical, electronic, user interaction and branding specialists to create, test and improve accurate, working product and service prototypes.
We use in-house test facilities, user groups and accredited test labs to validate that a product design is optimal.
Collaborating with our engineering design team we deliver unambiguous engineering specification and support production implementation.
Results
Industrial design creatively balances people, technology and organisational needs to deliver the optimum balance of cost and value in products.
